Spring 2026 Cross-Connection Notice

IMPORTANT NOTICE FROM

As we head into yard and garden season, CPWS wants to help you keep your home’s drinking water clean and safe.

What is a "Cross Connection"? It happens when a potential contaminant — like a pool, pesticide sprayer, or chemical container — is directly linked to the public water system via your garden hose.

The Risk: Back Siphonage If a water main breaks or a fire hydrant is used nearby, the sudden change in pressure can suck chemicals or dirty water from your hose back into the main water supply.

Simple Solutions for Every Homeowner:

  • The Golden Rule: Never place a garden hose in anything you wouldn't want to drink.
  • Use Vacuum Breakers: These inexpensive safety devices can be found at any hardware store and easily twist onto your outdoor taps.
  • No Plumber Needed: You can install these yourself on all outdoor spigots, including frost-free ones.
  • Irrigation Check: All automatic irrigation systems must have a dedicated backflow protection device installed.
